New innovative sensor technology enhances real-time monitoring of apple and pear ripening process; offers packers an eye into their storage rooms as part of post-harvest solution

PHILADELPHIA, April 19, 2023 – As part of its commitment to bring forward cutting-edge technological solutions that reduce food loss and promote sustainable agriculture, AgroFresh Solutions, Inc., the leader in post-harvest freshness solutions announced a partnership with Strella, a leading startup and developer of proprietary sensor technology. The global exclusive distribution agreement will launch immediately for the northern hemisphere’s apple and pear seasons and leverage AgroFresh’s relationships with more than 3,700 customers worldwide.

“We are excited to be working together with Strella to expand the reach for this innovative technology and provide our customers with the data and insights they need to help reduce food waste and maintain the quality and freshness of apples and pears as they move through the supply chain,” said Clint Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for AgroFresh. “Our partnership with Strella expands our comprehensive portfolio of post-harvest solutions and further supports our customers in their efforts to grow and distribute an abundant supply of sustainable fresh produce around the world.”

Strella’s proprietary sensors collect real-time perishability data on apples and pears while they are in storage, allowing customers to make data-driven inventory decisions to maintain freshness and protect the value of their produce in storage to yield a higher quality pack out with limited disruptions in supply to the market. This technology will complement AgroFresh’s FreshCloud™ platform. FreshCloud™ is an integrated digital platform that provides end-to-end data visibility and monitoring of produce quality at all points along the value chain and moves the quality-control (QC) inspection process to the digital age.

“We are thrilled to be working together with AgroFresh” said Katherine Sizov, Chief Executive Officer for Strella. “We work hard to provide the best service we can to our customers and believe that partnering with a customer-focused organization like AgroFresh will help us bring our solution to more packers across the globe. Our focus is to use technology and data to enable smarter decisions across the supply chain. Addressing inefficiencies in fruit storage is a critical step in building a more resilient future in food,” said Sizov.
The new agreement allows AgroFresh to build on the company’s full portfolio of integrated post-harvest products, services and digital solutions designed to maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of fresh produce.

Flexible application solution, SmartFresh™ ProTabs, added to SmartFresh Quality System portfolio in key fruit growing countries, Brazil and Mexico

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 7, 2023 – AgroFresh Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: AGFS) (“AgroFresh” or the “Company”) today announced the new registration approval and launch of SmartFresh™ ProTabs in Brazil and Mexico. This new application method has been added to the SmartFresh Quality system portfolio, extending the availability of AgroFresh’s leading SmartFresh ProTabs technology for growers and packers in these two countries.

AgroFresh revolutionized the apple industry 20 years ago with the introduction of SmartFresh, the original and industry leading trusted brand of ethylene management technology, 1-methylcyclopropene (1- MCP). SmartFresh puts the ripening process on hold, so that softening and over-ripening occur much more slowly during storage and transport, extending shelf life. Leveraging AgroFresh’s extensive regulatory expertise, the global SmartFresh ProTabs formulation is now also available in Brazil and Mexico. The launch of this new formulation in the region continues to build upon AgroFresh’s full portfolio of freshness solutions that are tailored to a variety of customer needs and operation sizes.  SmartFresh ProTabs offers a unique delayed release mode, suitable for service and for do-it-yourself applications. It is simpler to use and does not require generators or water to initiate it.

“At AgroFresh we are driven by a spirit of innovation, continually finding new ways to help our global customers meet an increasing consumer demand for higher-quality, fresher and more sustainable produce,” said Narciso Vivot, Commercial Director, Latin America. “Through the expansion of these new simple, convenient application options to Brazil and Mexico, our customers can continue to rely on the SmartFresh Quality System to provide a consistent supply of sustainable high-quality produce as well as help to fight against food loss and waste and minimize their environmental impact.”

SmartFresh ProTabs is approved for use in apples for storage room treatments and is also approved for a wide variety of tropical crops, including mangoes and avocados. SmartFresh ProTabs are easy to apply and handle, offering effective protection against internal and external threats to freshness, resulting in increased shelf life and reduced levels of food loss and waste. The SmartFresh Quality System is used in over 25,000 fruit storage rooms worldwide. As the global leader, AgroFresh operates seven innovation centers on four continents in key fruit growing regions and has introduced a full portfolio of post-harvest freshness solutions, services and digital solutions that meet the needs of growers and packers around the world.

Distribution partnership brings new biological fungicide, an organic and sustainable option, to the post-harvest industry to combat food loss and waste

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 10, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — AgroFresh Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: AGFS) (“AgroFresh” or the “Company”), the global leader in postharvest freshness solutions, and Ceradis Crop Protection B.V., a global developer of environmentally friendly crop protection products, today announced they have entered into an exclusive license and distribution agreement to bring CeraFruta®, a new organic bio-solution that fights fungal decay, to the postharvest space. The agreement between the two companies will launch in the U.S., leveraging AgroFresh’s experience working with customers on innovative solutions that reduce food loss and promote sustainable agriculture.

“AgroFresh is committed to bringing to market a full range of novel, natural and biologic solutions that maximize produce freshness and help reduce food loss and waste,” said Clint Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for AgroFresh. “We’re excited to collaborate with the team at Ceradis on this innovative new organic solution, helping our customers continue to find the most sustainable ways to
deliver fresh produce to global consumers.”

With Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listed status for organic use in the U.S., CeraFruta is a highly innovative solution for broad-spectrum control of post-harvest fruit decays including blue mold, gray mold, green mold, brown rot and anthracnose. CeraFruta also controls mucor and sour rots, post-harvest diseases that currently cannot be adequately controlled by industry-standard synthetic fungicides.

“We are thrilled to be working with AgroFresh and the trust they’ve built among U.S. channel partners and growers in bringing to market innovative products that are efficient and sustainable,” says Jan Stechmann, Ceradis Vice President, Marketing and Sales. “As an organic best-in-class solution for postharvest decay, CeraFruta fulfills an important role in the food chain. Our strategic relationship with AgroFresh will immediately expand the product’s U.S. footprint while also helping growers meet the increasing consumer demand for fresh produce.”

The active ingredient in CeraFruta is natamycin, a naturally occurring molecule derived from soil bacteria. Natamycin protects crops from decay by binding and inhibiting the function of fungi-specific cell membranes. This unique mode of action shows a high efficacy level against key post-harvest diseases on a range of crops, including pome fruits, stone fruits and citrus. Natamycin has been used in other sectors of the food industry for over 40 years, including as a food preservative in meats, cheeses and baked goods, without resistance occurring. CeraFruta is approved and registered by the EPA.

Under the new agreement, AgroFresh will be the exclusive market channel for CeraFruta in the post-harvest market in the US. For additional information on AgroFresh, visit www.agrofresh.com.

AgroFresh experts available at Booth D22/46 to discuss near and post-harvest solutions that help maintain produce quality, freshness and reduce food loss and waste

PHILADELPHIA, November 3, 2022 – AgroFresh Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: AGFS) (“AgroFresh” or the “Company”) today announced their participation in Interpoma in Bolzano, Italy Nov. 17–19 at booth D22/46. Interpoma is the only international trade show dedicated exclusively to the world of apples, from production to storage to marketing. Two decades ago AgroFresh revolutionized the fruit and produce industry with the introduction of SmartFresh™, the first (1-MCP) ethylene management technology to delay the ripening process in apples. Today, AgroFresh’s complete portfolio for apples includes near- and post-harvest ethylene management solutions, digital monitoring and analytics technology, fungicides, coatings, sanitizers, detergents and packaging-line equipment.

“At AgroFresh, we have been committed to the apple industry for over twenty years which started with the introduction of the SmartFresh Quality System,” said Conor Walshe, Commercial Business Director EMEA for AgroFresh. “We’re excited to come together with experts from around the world to share our newest innovations and growing portfolio of solutions that help growers, packers and retailers protect the freshness of their harvest at each step of the value chain, reducing food waste and conserving global resources.”

At Interpoma, AgroFresh experts will share information about their growing range of innovative freshness solutions for apples, including:

  • FreshCloud™ – AgroFresh’s integrated digital platform uses aggregated data, machine learning and artificial intelligence to sustainably address food waste reduction and derive quality and supply chain insights, allowing for real time decisions with live analytics. Live demonstrations of the digital platform will take place at the AgroFresh booth in the FreshCloud Corner.
  • FreshStart™ – This year, the company launched new disinfectants for the disinfection of washing water in contact with apples that are organic certified by CAAE. FreshStart degrades quickly without leaving residues and can decrease contaminants in water treatment and help make water recycling more efficient and less costly. These disinfectants work as a complement to fungicides for optimal rot control.
  • Harvista™ – AgroFresh’s near-harvest solution, Harvista helps growers control how and when apples ripen, controlling peak ripeness, helping to extend the harvest window and allowing them to adjust to unexpected weather conditions, climate changes and labor availability. The unique mode of action allows for flexible use with proven efficacy to increase quality yield and reduce waste. In 2022, Harvista was approved via emergency permit for use in several European countries, including Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal, Poland and the Piamonte region in Italy.

New VitaFresh Botanicals Life Select extends the shelf-life of fresh produces; receives CAAE organic certification

PHILADELPHIA, August 3, 2022 – AgroFresh Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: AGFS) (“AgroFresh” or the “Company”) today announced the launch of VitaFresh™ Botanicals Life Select, an organic plant-based coating to keep produce fresh longer and reduce food loss and waste. Developed from the carnauba tree palm leaf, the new VitaFresh Botanicals Life Select formulation has received organic certification from CAAE, a leading international certifier. AgroFresh is a global agtech innovator and the leader in the fresh produce post-harvest segment, providing a full range of freshness solutions and digital technologies that enhance the quality and extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Life Select is the newest addition to the company’s full VitaFresh Botanicals portfolio of proprietary plant-based post-harvest solutions for a wide variety of crops from citrus to avocados to mangos. The new coating reduces dehydration, maintains weight and locks in freshness throughout the supply chain.

Recent trial testing of the product in avocados showed positive results both before and after ripening, including increased shelf life by two to three days, decreased internal browning by 50 to 67 percent, and improved internal appearance by 50 percent. These impacts on shelf life translate into an overall 50 percent reduction in waste.

“Our customers are looking for versatile solutions to address their most pressing operational and supply chain challenges in order to provide a consistent supply and the highest quality produce for consumers. Our focus is to help our customers with solutions that preserve freshness and minimize food loss and waste,” said Clint Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for AgroFresh. “Protecting our global food system has never been a more urgent charge. Advancements like VitaFresh Botanicals Life Select help us fulfill our promise to meet the world’s need for fresh, safe and abundant produce while reducing our impact on the environment.”

VitaFresh Botanicals Life Select ingredients are sustainably sourced and the product is created using certified ISO 14001 environmental management system standards. The new formulation has received CAAE organic certification according to REGULATION (EU) 2018/848 on organic production. In addition, it is packaged in reusable containers. Excellent crop coverage at low application rates offers better cost efficiencies to operators and gives retailers a stronger opportunity to market the best quality produce using consumer-friendly claims, while reducing food waste, increasing profit potential and adding the capability to reduce the amount of plastic packaging needed for the produce.

“Thanks to the dedication and formulation expertise of our scientific teams working around the world, we’re able to announce this important addition to our VitaFresh Botanicals portfolio,” said Duncan Aust, Chief Technology Officer for AgroFresh. “Now in addition to a full coatings product line that leverages natural and plant-based ingredients, we have an organic option that helps meet an increased demand for these types of solutions.”

AgroFresh operates seven innovation centers on four continents in key fruit growing regions and offers a full portfolio of post-harvest freshness solutions that meet the needs of growers and packers around the world. VitaFresh Botanicals products have exceptional quality, due in part to the company’s ISO 9001 quality management system certification. AgroFresh adds differentiating value by offering a comprehensive post-harvest portfolio, a complete range of packinghouse equipment, one-to-one problem-solving support and a high-touch service model, all aimed at delivering the highest level of client confidence and trust in the industry.
